The Spring Effect Returns!

Spring is officially here. Wow, what a winter it has been.  Record rains and record snowfall across California. This bodes very well for anyone involved in agriculture…or skiing!

CNN reports that our snow-pack is at about 136% above historical levels, which is ideal, as this water will slowly melt into the state’s streams, rivers and aquifers.
 



To give you some perspective, Mammoth Mountain ski resort has received 37 feet of snow this year!
Air and soil temperatures are warming, longer hours of sun, and plenty of water mean the arrival of what we at Sun Valley fondly call “The Spring Effect.”

We grow flowers year-round, and honestly, some days this can be a challenge. As an example, our gorgeous lilies need about 12 hours of light a day to perform at their peak.  This mean using artificial light for about 4 hours a day in late December at the shortest day of the year.

In summer, sometimes the heat wants to bring the flowers to bloom too soon, so we work hard to keep the crop cool and covered in shade.

Spring though, is when nature aligns with our goals as flower farmers…or is it the other way around?

Right now our efforts are facilitated my nature, bringing a robust harvest across our crop calendar.
Luckily, this is also the time of year consumers are thinking about flowers. The natural signs of spring are everywhere, birds chirping, trees budding and of course rainbows galore.
