Spring Kinetic Energy

“Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.” -Lewis Grizzard

Happy First Day of Spring! Hallelujah! I’m not sure how your winter has been, but this year in particular, I am thrilled that we have reached the equinox and the days will start getting longer.

Sun Valley Floral Farms, Arcata. Looking west.

As flower farmers we are smack-dab in the middle of the action. Women’s Day is behind us, and we are busily shipping flowers for an early Easter coming April 1st, no joke!

We are not the only ones happy it is spring, the flowers are ecstatic.  They are growing just as Mother Nature intended, we call this “The Spring Effect.”

Here comes the Hyacinth!
Longer days and warmer temperatures have all our crops on the move. Honestly, it’s a powerful sensation to duck your head into a hoop house full of Hyacinth or a greenhouse full of kalanchoe and feel the energy.  Is there a state of energy between potential and kinetic, because this is the experience right now on our farms.

In Arcata, our hyacinth, tulips, lilies and iris are all coming in beautifully.  We even have a special “Spring Fling” mixed box that maybe we should rename the “Spring Effect” box…  hmmm. Maybe not.

Down the California coast in Oxnard, our Matsomoto Asters are catching up to demand as the longer days helps push the crop, and our Kalanchoe is looking stunning.

QUESTION: How do you pronounce Kalanchoe? It is actually #10 on a recent list of hardest to pronounce flower names! Here are options,
  • KA-luhn-KO-e
  • kuh-LANG-ko-e
  • KAL-uhn-cho
  • kuh-LAN-cho
...or if you are Dutch, kuh-LAN-Cho-Way

At Sun Valley Niagara, we are picking tulips not only for our accounts in the region, but shipping tulips to our cross-dock in Miami.  It is now very easy to have beautiful quality, soil grown tulips added to your Miami truck.  No other flower represents spring better than a tulip, so get a few cases put on your Miami truck and watch them fly off the shelf!

Butterfly Ranunculus

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention that the Spring Effect is also benefiting our greens department. Now is the time to secure your inventory through June with a standing order for April, May and June.  We are offering standing orders on salal tips, bear grass and huckleberry, and we have volume discounts available.

Spring is not only in the air, but in the soil, in the roots, and in the blooms and, when you receive your order, you will also see spring is in the box!
